- His [sc. (David McClelland)’s] theory is that we are first of all presented with cues in affective situations; for instance, sugar is put in the mouth and this produces pleasurable affect. This type of cue then becomes paired with an affective state in such a way that the cue will, as a result of association, come to ‘redintegrate ’ the affective state first associated with it.
